SOUTH African journalists -- at least some of them -- can hold their heads up high and stop flagellating themselves. Something has revived in at least some of our media -- the fighting spirit that is essential to keeping our country's leaders on their toes. In recent months, the talk in media has been of cutbacks in newsrooms around the world, closures of titles, consolidation and the loss of senior and experienced journalists.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) suspended ASA president Leonard Chuene, his entire executive, and three employees in November. First we had the Saftas, then the Baftas and today, on this very website, we introduce the Zeftas, the awards inspired by a slang word used in the 70s and 80s, and now given new life by Afrikaans rap thingymabobs, Die Antwoord. These awards are inspired by things that are zef; ie, those things so wrong, so ugly, so mis-matched and so far out of touch that they are out of town. Zef isn't safe; it isn't lank tit, either, and neither is it schweet, safe or kief, my broer.
